The Kewaskum A’s picked up a big 6-2 win over the Brownsville 49ers on Sunday to move the A’s to 3-0 (5-3 overall) in Rock River League play. Brownsville struck first with a two-run homer in the top of the 1st, but Alex Nuelk got the A’s on the board in the 2nd with a two-out RBI single to make it a 2-1 game. Brownsville countered with scoring chances early and often, but the A’s were able to keep them off the board thanks to some excellent defense and timely pitching. The turning point of the game might have been in the 5th inning when Adam Sarauer was able to rob a would be two-run homer off the bat of Josh Klismith to keep the score at 2-1. The A’s rode this momentum from there as they put together a two-out rally in the 6th inning. With two outs and Kurt Zagzebski on first base, Nuelk singled and Tony Gonring was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Brad Young. Young capitalized on the scoring opportunity as he ripped a double to the gap to clear the bases and give the A’s a 4-2 lead.
Alex Nuelk added a two-out 2 RBI double in the 7th to push the A’s lead to 6-2 and that was enough of a cushion for starting pitcher Jim Ziegler (CG Win, 2 ER, 9 Hits, 8 K’s) who settled in after a shaky start to pick up the win on the mound. Nuelk finished the day 4x4 (2B, 3 RBI’s) while Jason Strobel, Austin Sarauer and Kurt Zagzebski each added two hits apiece. The A’s have a busy week ahead as they travel to West Allis on Thursday (WSL) and Lebanon on Friday (RRL). Then on Sunday they host a WSL doubleheader in West Bend against Addison (IL).
